Details of Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada Junior Research Scholarship.

Applications are open for the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada Junior Research Scholarship 2020. The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is committed to fostering the next generation of Asia Pacific researchers and practitioners.

To this end, it is offering a seven-month Junior Research Scholarship for applicants interested in learning more about Canada-Asia Pacific subnational relations (Engaging Asia) and those interested in learning more about Canada-Asia trade and investment relations (Business Asia). The Junior Research Scholar will work at the Foundation’s Vancouver office and will complete a program of research and other work related to the Foundation’s research. The recipient should be able to complete the scholarship for seven months between February and August 2020.

Duties

The Junior Research Scholar will work under the mentorship of one or more of the Foundation’s program managers, and will engage in the following activities:

  • Engaging Asia Scholars
    • Working with APF Canada’s research team to gather, sort, and analyze data related to Canada – Asia Pacific subnational relations (Indigenous Canada, twinning/sister cities, business engagement, trade missions, Asia strategies)
    • Providing support to APF Canada’s tri-weekly Asia Watch newsletter;
    • Providing additional research support as needed; and
    • Assist with report writing.
  • Business Asia Scholars
    • Working with APF Canada’s research team in conducting research on Canada-Asia trade and investment relations;
    • Providing support to APF Canada Investment Monitor project’s collection and management of data;
    • Providing support to APF Canada’s tri-weekly Asia Watch newsletter;
    • Providing additional research support as needed; and
    • Assist with report writing.

Grant

  • The amount of the grant will be $21,000, and will be payable in four installments.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should be eligible to work in Canada and have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree program within 24 months of the application deadline.
  • The Junior Research Scholar will be encouraged to work out of the Foundation’s head office in downtown Vancouver, Monday to Friday, during normal office hours for five days a week.

Successful Engaging Asia Scholars will have the following qualifications:

  • Interest in learning about Canada-Asia Pacific subnational relations (twinning/sister cities, trade missions, business, Indigenous Canada – Asia relations, Asia strategies).
  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative research skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (including strong Word and Excel skills);
  • Demonstrated interest in economics, business, Asian Studies, Indigenous Studies, and/or international relations;
  • Good interpersonal skills and proven intercultural awareness;
  • Familiarity with and knowledge of contemporary Indigenous Canada an asset;
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations, communities, and/or businesses an asset.

Successful Business Asia Scholars will have the following qualifications:

  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative research skills;
  • Experience in research related statistics gathering and analysis;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (including strong MS Excel skills);
  • Experience with data science is a plus;
  • Demonstrated interest in economics and/or international relations;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Interest in learning about Canada-Asia Pacific trade and investment relations.

  • Résumé detailing the applicant’s academic background, skills and professional experiences;
  • One-page cover letter detailing the applicant’s research interests, career interests and goals, how they hope to benefit from the scholarship, and why they are interested in working in the thematic area specified in the call for applications;
  • Copy of applicant’s university undergraduate and master’s degree (if applicable) transcript(s) (scanned or electronic copies are sufficient);
  • An academic writing sample no more than 10 pages single spaced in English;
  • Name, title and contact information (email and phone number) for two academic or professional references.

References will be contacted only if the applicant is shortlisted for the scholarship.
