Details of Urban Resilience Planner at UN-Habitat Vacancy Positions & How to Apply.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the UN agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The Urban Economy Branch of UN-Habitat has the mandate to promote local capabilities of local governments to develop financial instruments to keep pace with the demands of rapid urbanization. The Urban Economy Branch has the mandate to promote plans and provide support for more efficient, socially inclusive, better integrated and connected cities that foster sustainable urban development.

Duties and responsibilities

The consultant will be working under the direct supervision of Programme Management Officer within the Planning Finance and Economy section, of the Urban Practices Branch. They will interact with certain stakeholders supporting programmes led by the Programme Management Officer, and therefore he/she will be appointed based on securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. The consultant will undertake the following tasks:

  • Finalized validation workshops for the urban regeneration final proposed and collated strategies and action plans meetings and engagements with the National and County Government, Host and Refugee communities, UN and other humanitarian actors.
  • Finalized urban regeneration strategy report for Kakuma-Kalobeyei and ensured adoption at the county level through sensitization and awareness engagement meetings.
  • Strengthened disaster response and management through reconstruction and rehabilitation of flood and drought resilient infrastructure.
  • Enhanced preparedness of local government, host and refugee communities for climate disaster impacts through early warning systems.
  • Enhanced economic and food security for host and refugee communities for promotion of human security through income generating activities for women and youth.
  • Conducts geospatial analysis of vulnerability assets/communities to derive future actions related to the project implementation and perform related work as assigned or required.
  • Support preparation and conducting of relevant workshop and engagements with the National and County Government, Host and Refugee communities, UN and other humanitarian actors on disaster preparedness and climate resilient.
  • Participated as a technical focal point within the spatial planning, shelter and infrastructure working group under KISDEP in coordination meetings with various stakeholder including the Turkana County Government, UN-Agencies and other partners.
  • Preparation of necessary spatial maps using GIS or any other relevant software.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications:

  1. University degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in Urban Planning, Rural development, Agricultural science, Social Studies or related field that is relevant in sustainable urban development is required.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience dealing with sustainable urban development and climate change resilience. Relevant experience in architecture, planning and urban designing of flood mitigation measures and resilience infrastructure, public and social facilities such as public/green spaces, sustainable housing model, infrastructure and community development is required.
  • Working experience in humanitarian setting on spatial planning and disaster management as well as hosting workshops/meetings in Kakuma-Kalobeyei, Kenya, with local stakeholders is an added advantage.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this consultancy, fluency in English, both verbal and written, is required.
  • Knowledge of other UN languages is desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of Swahili is an asset.
