Kenya Methodist University KEMU Centre for Virtual Learning: Steps to Register on Virtual Campus, SUpport COntacts and Departmental Officers.
With the growing need for lifelong learning, the Centre for Virtual Learning (CVL), previously the Directorate of Open, Distance and eLearning, was conceived in the year 2001. The initial core mandate of the Department was to deliver Academic Programmes through Distance Learning.
Today, the CVL is committed to transforming how we deliver the learning and teaching experience at the University. The Department is anchored on three main pillars: Learner and Faculty support, Content Development and a versatile Digital Learning environment.
Structures within the institution are enabling both faculty and students to make the best use of the current technology to transform learning and teaching. Faculty trainings to build capacity on development of eLearning content are held continuously. For our valued students, we conduct both scheduled and one-on-one trainings on effectively using the Digital Campus platform.
On the Digital Learning environment, we have invested in ICT infrastructure and a user-friendly online Learning Management System which we refer to as the “Digital Campus”. To ensure 24/7 access to this facility for both our Faculty and Students, we have hosted the Digital Campus in one of the most reliable cloud service providers and since October 2018 we can proudly say that we have not had any downtime.
We currently have students registered for various Academic Programmes and learning from over fifteen different countries globally and they are able to sit their examinations at a centre of their choice.
Over two hundred (200) Faculty from the four Schools are conducting their teaching for their Distance Learning students on the Digital Campus by providing both textual and multimedia content. The web conferencing facility enables the Faculty to conduct real-time sessions with their students from across the globe.
To improve the quality of our course content, KeMU is in collaboration with the Association of Commonwealth University (ACU) through the Partnership of Enhanced and Blended Learning (PEBL) Project where we are utilizing the Open Education Resources and blending these courses for our students.
The Department is housed both at the Main Campus (Administration Block) and Nairobi Campus (11thFloor) with very friendly and welcoming Learning Support Officers. We ensure each of the four schools in the university is supported by a School Academic Coordinator. A Coordinator on matters Content Development and an eLearning Administrator support the Department to run its core mandate.
